Why read during the summer months?
The importance of summer reading has been demonstrated repeatedly in a variety
of research studies. Over and over again, it has been shown that children who read
during the summer do much better in school when it starts again in the fall. On the
other hand, children who do not read during the summer demonstrate a significant
loss over the summer.

CLAS believes that reading is fundamental to the intellectual development of our Scribes. During the regular school year, each Scribe is expected to read at least 20 minutes each night independently. In addition, the English curriculum is supplemented with required summer reading.

Because these assignments serve to keep our students sharp and ready for the rigors of the next year's curriculum, all middle school Scribes must complete the summer reading assignments. Each of the grade 6, 7, and 8 assignments require students to read two grade level chapter books and complete an asignment for each of the books they read. The assignments and the books that they are to read are detailed in the links below. All Scribes must have both assignments completed by the due dates listed on the assignments. No exceptions.

Don't allow your child to procrastinate. Ensure that s/he is reading now. Just click on the link that corresponds to the grade level of your middle school child. (Adobe Reader may be ™ required. You can download it here.)
