To successfully deliver differentiated instruction that results in marked growth and achievement for our students, CLAS focuses on a comprehensive assessment system that features both diagnostic and holistic, formal and informal assessments. These assesments inform the important instructional decisions made daily by teachers to provide the very best instruction for students at the Culture and Language Academy of Success.

CLAS assessments are comprised of ongoing informal assessments conducted by our student advocates on daily basis; diagnostic reading assessments and learning styles and brain-based learning assessments from it's core web-based reading program, Keys to Reading Success; comprehensive standards-based assessments in language arts and mathematics generated by our technology-driven assessment provider, PassPlan™; assessments provided by our world-class mathematics program, Everyday Mathematics™; and the California Achievement Test-6th Edition (CAT-6) the formal standardized assessment required of all public school students, grade one and above, by the State of California Department of Education.

One key feature of the CLAS assessment system is the innovative use of the CLAS Student Learning Record by our student advocates/teachers as an alternative to traditional report cards. These anecdotal reports are based on the progress your child has made throughout the school year in relation to both California state learning standards and the progress of other children in the same ability and age group. The CLAS Student Learning Record includes a narrative report, a number score based on rubrics calibrated against learning standards, and a graphed representation of achievement.
