New Family Orientation on July 31, 2010
CLAS welcomes all of our newly admitted families!!! As you will immediately see, CLAS is a unique place of learning; a movement for change in how to best educate our children. We are looking forward to a great year.

Your year starts with our annual new parent orientation session. This is a mandatory event. New families are required to attend. Student(s) may not be able to start in September until the information provided at this session is given to you. Your successful enrollment in CLAS is directly related to your attendance and participation in this meeting.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • Philosophy and foundational underpinning of CLAS curriculum
  • Overview of CLAS calendar and events
  • CLAS Parent Organization and “how to” organize training
  • Google Documents Enrollment

The new parent orientation session will be on Saturday, July 31, 2010. The time will be from 9:00-2:00. Registration will begin at 8:45. There will be a 30-minute lunch. The location is Orville Wright Middle School located at 6550 West 80th Street,. Los Angeles, CA 90045. Note that the entrance to CLAS is on the Emerson Street side, just south of 80th St, not the front of the school on 80th Street. Sorry, no child care will be provided.

We look forward to seeing all new families there!

CLAS Highlights Summer's Cool At Our Summer School!
CLAS’ Young Scholars Summer Camp (YSSC) for Kindergarten through 8th grade has gotten off to a great start!

Our Young Scholars Summer Camp is providing a full-day program featuring core academic study in English Language Arts and Mathematics in the mornings and arts and crafts, sports fundamentals, and swimming in the afternoons with field trips on Fridays! Classes and activities are taught by experienced credentialed teachers and/or camp counselors.

The Young Scholars Summer Camp offers a ten week program, June 21 to August 27, 2010, at the Orville Wright location in Westchester. Cost is only $100 per week. Compared to other summer camps this is a very competitive rate for a program of this quality. And substantial savings can be had through our early bird and sibling discounts. Multilple payment plans of every week, every two weeks, or every five weeks are available also.

To get more details contact Nychelle Toussaint or Erwin Woodard, the summer camp coordinators. Email Mrs Toussaint or call her at 323-717-2345. Email Erwin Woodard or call him at 310-989-8527.

READ • REFLECT • RESPOND: The CLAS Community Blog
READ • REFLECT • RESPOND is now online! The blog represents one way that CLAS is attempting to leverage technology to facilitate Community. The blog allows the advocates and others in the CLAS Community to share ideas, discuss issues, and make known goings-on relevant to the Community. It encourages interaction within the community on topics important to all of us by allowing you to communicate publicly by posting comments and asking questions about published topics. We look forward to your frequent visits here to read, reflect, and respond and hope that you will enjoy doing so.

The blog's current main post features the contents of a very well written, informative, and enlightening letter penned by Board member Marguerite LaMotte in response to misleading information abut CLAS that has been delivered to LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines by the LAUSD Charter Schools office.

Also, be sure to read Is the CLAS Half Full or Half Empty?, Dr. Hollie's thought provoking post about viewing the current state of CLAS from an affirmative perspective.

After reading be sure to reflect on both posts and, just as important, share your thoughts with the community by leaving a comment. We look forward to regularly responding to your ideas.
