Community Handbook

We are community.

Schools are communities and should at all times seek to reinforce their identity as a community through deliberate practices. We affectionately refer to ourselves at CLAS as family and we share a closeness–a bond–like any family. Engagement in community building practices takes place frequently to strengthen this closeness.

Our student advocates believe in developing this bond on three distinct, yet interwoven, levels. Firstly, they act through practice to develop kinship with those on whose behalf they advocate–their students. Next, they engage in collaborative practice and professsional development with their colleagues to consciously avoid the isolation that so frequently characterizes teaching in the traditional school environment. Thirdly, they seek to communicate and collaborate on a deep level with their students' parents and /or caregivers and families to ensure that their students understand that education in rooted in firm partnerships between school and home.

Culture and Language Academy of Success organizes Community Gatherings that bring the school as a whole together in non-tradititonal settings to communicate, fellowship, network, and have a great time. Our Parent Education Workshops are held on Saturdays and provide parents and caregivers the opportunity to go to school to increase their knowledge of curriculum, technology, pedagogical approach, nutrition, and any other aspect of the CLAS experience. Cultural festivals bring the community together to bask in fun, affirming activities that celebrate and champion our culture and it's rich intellectual heritage and artistic traditions.

Moreover, we seek to always be cognizant of the local community in which our campuses communicating and collaborating with our residential neighbors to know how it is we can assist them. Additionaly, we're establishing reciprocal partnerships with local businesses, spiritual centers, and community organizations to spur collaboration, stimulate activism, and develop leadership.
